I have a 98 T4. Just been serviced and has been faultles. Driving round London the other day it started to missfire, When I looked at the engine temp it was 98c!! luckerly the traffic started to move and it cooled down and is running fine. The question is when do the cooling fans kick in??? And if it is lower than 98c then I must have a prob and any ideas?

According to the digital gauge on my 2.0T, it's fan kicks in at 102 degrees (yep over a hundred) and cuts out at about 96.

Don't forget that the coolant doesn't boil at 100, and since its under pressure, its a long way from boiling... You could have an air lock though - if you get air trapped in the system it can play havoc. Good luck

I have a 98 T4 and the fan starts at about 102c. It's done this from birth, so I've assumed it's correct. Don't panic, unless it goes over that. Under pressure, the water temp can go well over 102c.
