S.Korean experts seek to verify room-temperature superconductor claim

A committee of South Korean experts has been established to verify claims surrounding the discovery of a room temperature superconductor, which has generated both investor excitement and scientific skepticism. The Korean Society of Superconductivity and Cryogenics has requested Quantum Energy Research Centre to submit samples for verification of its researchers’ findings on a room-temperature superconductor material, which was made public on a website before formal publication.

The authenticity of the reported results has been a subject of controversy, prompting the need for verification. While superconductors, which have no electrical resistance and allow electrical currents to pass through without energy loss, are highly valuable, existing materials exhibit superconductivity only at extreme temperatures and pressures, limiting practical applications.

Organizations such as Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Pohang University of Science and Technology will verify the findings if samples are provided by Quantum Energy Research Centre. Various member organizations are also conducting their own verification research.

Despite skepticism among some scientists, shares in the U.S., China, and South Korea surged after the claim of a practical superconductor was publicized. The global frenzy further intensified after a Chinese university published a video replicating the experiment. However, the Chinese superconductor-related stocks index, which had risen up to 22% since the South Korean researchers’ papers were published in late July, saw a significant decline on Thursday.
