Open-source technologies and cloud computing will continue to power India’s digital economy, says Karmendra Trivedi of Canonical India

India’s Economy Benefits from Cloud Technology, says Karmendra Trivedi of Canonical India

Karmendra Trivedi, Sales Director of Canonical India, the company behind Ubuntu, highlights the potential of cloud technology in driving the Indian economy. With India surpassing the UK and becoming the fifth largest economy globally, Trivedi believes that cloud technology can contribute to innovation, entrepreneurship, and overall economic growth.

Trivedi discusses the direct and indirect impact of cloud technology on India’s economy, citing the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) prediction that by 2026, cloud computing could contribute $315 to $375 billion to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and create 14 million jobs.

According to Trivedi, there are four main components that will be impacted by cloud adoption: GDP, employment, innovation and entrepreneurship, and technological progress. He emphasizes the role of open-source technologies and cloud computing in supporting India’s digital journey and states that they will continue to play a crucial role as technology evolves.

Cloud computing offers businesses unparalleled flexibility, scalability, and cost efficiency, making it an essential part of operations in today’s digital age. The agility and resilience provided by cloud technologies have become fundamental to the survival and success of businesses. Cloud computing allows for easy adjustment of computing power, saving costs by converting capital expenses into operational ones, promoting collaboration through seamless communication, and enabling higher business resilience through advanced artificial intelligence, machine learning, and analytics.

Trivedi identifies the lack of organizational understanding of the benefits of cloud technology as a primary barrier to adoption in India. He stresses the importance of enhancing knowledge and staying aware of technological advancements to keep pace with the rapidly advancing cloud industry. Canonical, as an open-source technology provider, aims to stay two steps ahead and supports organizations with long-term security and enterprise-level support, effectively integrating with the cloud.

Ubuntu, the widely used and preferred operating system in the cloud, offers users the freedom of Linux and the benefits of open-source software without the burden of configuration, maintenance, or security concerns. Canonical ensures the security of Ubuntu through prompt resolution of vulnerabilities and provides critical updates and committed security maintenance as part of its LTS (Long-Term Support) model.

Trivedi envisions a future where Canonical’s landscape helps customers manage and automate their Ubuntu servers and desktops in the cloud, reducing operating costs and simplifying server management. He also highlights the innovative use cases of Ubuntu, such as ChatGPT, which relies on cloud technology and open-source software.

Despite the evolving nature of the ecosystem, Trivedi emphasizes that India remains one of the primary adopters of open-source technologies, surpassing even mature markets. The dynamic world of open-source technologies is expected to continue driving India’s next leap of digital transformation.

Overall, Trivedi’s insights underscore the significant role that cloud technology, particularly open-source technologies like Ubuntu, can play in shaping India’s economy and driving its digital growth.
