Generative AI Riding Crest of Gartner Hype Wave

According to Gartner’s 2023 hype cycle for emerging technologies, Generative AI has reached the “peak of inflated expectations,” indicating that it is at a stage where expectations and excitement about its potential are high. However, as the initial hype subsides, Gartner predicts that Generative AI will begin to deliver transformational benefits within the next two to five years.

Gartner’s report covers over 2,000 technologies and frameworks, distilling them into a set of emerging technologies that are expected to bring significant changes in the next two to ten years. While Generative AI is grabbing a lot of attention, the report also emphasizes the importance of exploring other emerging technologies with transformative potential.

The report mentions that various AI techniques beyond Generative AI are poised to make a significant impact on how we live, work, and conduct business. These include AI simulation, causal AI, federated machine learning, graph data science, neuro-symbolic AI, and reinforcement learning.

Experts and analysts agree that AI, particularly different forms of it, will reshape various domains, from enhancing customer experiences to boosting developer productivity. For instance, machine learning can assist in decision-making by analyzing vast amounts of data, improving cybersecurity efforts through AI-driven techniques, and significantly enhancing developer experiences by accelerating code creation and reducing communication costs.

In the realm of cloud and software development, technologies like AI-augmented software engineering, API-centric SaaS, GitOps, internal developer portals, open-source program offices, and value stream management platforms are seen as pivotal in driving developer productivity and innovation.

As the hype around various AI technologies continues to evolve, the emphasis is shifting from lofty expectations to tangible results and the integration of AI into real-world applications that deliver substantial value.
